Deer Woman stories are common across Native communities and hold an important place in the belief systems of many tribal nations. As a protective figure for women and children, Deer Woman has become a powerful symbol of resistance to violence against Native women, as well as a representation of the strength, resilience, and cultural knowledges carried by Native communities in general and Native women in particular. As a Muscogee woman and survivor of sexual and gender-based violence, I created this collection of four beaded tapestries to confront the ongoing violence experienced by Native women. The pieces explore the oppression imposed by settler colonialism and cisheteropatriarchy while also highlighting the beauty and resilience that emerge through the refusal of violence and the embrace of Native femme identities, knowledges, and expressions. The tapestries are intended to look like Native women’s shawls, carefully folded and hung with care on golden hangers, and draw from the cultural significance of shawls worn by Native women at powwows, where they symbolize identity, protection, connection to community, and the strength of Native womanhood. They also reference the shawls worn during Red Shawl Day, a movement that honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives. By incorporating shawl imagery, I connect contemporary experiences of Native women to traditions of resilience, remembrance, and collective resistance against violence and erasure. The self-defense knives disguised as tubes of lipstick add a powerful layer of meaning to the tapestries by highlighting the tension between femininity, beauty, and survival. Hanging from the beaded fringe like adornments, they initially resemble decorative objects associated with conventional ideas of womanhood. Upon closer inspection, however, they reveal themselves as weapons, underscoring the reality that many Native women must remain vigilant and prepared to protect themselves from violence.
